What Is a Soul Urge Number?
The Soul Urge number — also called the Heart's Desire number — is one of the five core numbers in a full numerology profile. It is calculated from the vowels only in your full birth name and is believed to reveal your innermost cravings, hidden motivations, and what you genuinely value at the deepest level of your being.
While your Expression Number (name number) shows how you appear to the world, and your Life Path Number shows your overarching journey, the Soul Urge Number describes the private, inner self — the desires that quietly shape your choices, even when you aren't consciously aware of them.
How Your Soul Urge Number Is Calculated
Using the Chaldean system, only the vowels in your full birth name are extracted and assigned their numerical values. The vowels and their Chaldean values are:
These values are summed, then reduced to a single digit (or Master Number 11, 22). For example, the name Sarah contains the vowels A(1) + A(1) = 2, giving a Soul Urge of 2 — The Love-Seeker.
Note: Whether Y is treated as a vowel depends on its phonetic role in the name. In this calculator, Y is always counted as a vowel for consistency.
Soul Urge vs Expression Number — What's the Difference?
Soul Urge Number
Calculated from vowels only. Reflects your private inner world — what you truly want, need, and feel most deeply. The desires beneath the surface.
Expression Number
Calculated from all letters. Reflects how you present yourself to the world — your talents, personality, and the energy others perceive in you.
Use the Name Analysis tool to calculate both your Soul Urge and Expression Number in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Soul Urge number and a Soul Plan?
These are two entirely different systems. A Soul Urge number (Heart's Desire number) is derived from the vowels in your birth name using Chaldean or Pythagorean numerology. A Soul Plan is a separate numerological framework created by Frank Alper and later adapted by Blue Marsden, using a different calculation method. This calculator provides Soul Urge numbers only.
Should I use my birth name or the name I go by?
For the most traditionally accurate Soul Urge reading, use the name on your birth certificate — even if you no longer use it. The birth name is considered your original energetic blueprint. You can also calculate the Soul Urge of your current name separately and compare the two.
Is Y always counted as a vowel?
In some numerology traditions, Y is counted as a vowel only when it functions as one phonetically (e.g., "Cyndy" where Y sounds like "ee"). In others, Y is always included as a vowel. This calculator treats Y consistently as a vowel in all cases. If you use the other convention, your result may differ by the value of Y (1 in Chaldean).
Can my Soul Urge number change if I change my name?
Yes. A legal name change that you use consistently in daily life will gradually shift the numerological energy you project, including the Soul Urge derived from that name. However, many numerologists believe your birth name Soul Urge remains a permanent underlying influence throughout your life.
